Verifying Alerts from Transport Stream Analyzers (ASI, IP and QAM) with Triggered Recording

Many operators have deployed transport stream analyzers (TSAs) that monitor the IP/MPEG transport streams for impairments. The challenge nearly all operators face is how to deal with the flood of alerts and prioritize the ones that affect customer service. By deploying an Observer RPM alongside the TSA, the RPM allows the operator to get a full frame-rate, full-resolution A/V clip of the impairments.

In this configuration, the TSA is configured to send stream/program alerts to the RPM, which is configured to do triggered recording from its SNMP trap receiver. When the TSA identifies a suspect program/stream, it send the SNMP trap and the RPM tunes a set-top box to the affected program and records the resultant user experience. After the alert condition is removed, the RPM’s STB reverts back to normal monitoring of all channels.

Operators can then examine the RPM’s triggered recording before deciding on which of the TSA alerts to address. Priority is obviously given to those that actually impact the customer experience.
