Volicon Observer® TS Logging System Earns Broadcast Engineering 2011 NAB Show Pick Hit Award
Observer® TS Enables Capture of Full-Resolution MPEG Transport Streams and Generation of Low-Resolution Proxy Content and Accompanying Metadata
BURLINGTON, Mass. — April 21, 2011 — Volicon today announced that its new Observer® TS MPEG (ASI/IP) transport stream logging system was among the select products to earn a 2011 NAB Show Pick Hit award from Broadcast Engineering. The Observer TS gives broadcasters, networks, and cable operators the ability to capture full-resolution MPEG transport streams and generate low-resolution proxy content and accompanying metadata. The Volicon solution also incorporates complete stream, search, analysis, clip extraction, and publish functionality — all from within the versatile Web-based Observer user interface.
“With familiar Observer Enterprise features and an enhanced Web interface tailored to handling MPEG transport streams, the Observer TS reduces the complexity of logging while adding value to logged data in multiple broadcast and network applications,” said Mike Asebrook, senior director of product marketing at Volicon. “We’re very pleased that the value of this innovative approach to monitoring and logging has been recognized among industry peers with a Broadcast Engineering 2011 NAB Show Pick Hit award. Having working professionals in the broadcast industry nominate the Observer TS over hundreds of other products at the NAB show speaks volumes about its workflow and overall value.”
With a long history, Pick Hit awards are prestigious technical awards given at the NAB Show. A panel of independent judges identified innovative products and technologies during the 2011 show and selected winners based on the technical and financial improvements the products can bring to a facility’s operations.
As broadcasters and networks continue to migrate toward the model of recording the native ASI and IP transport MPEG stream while generating low-res proxies, Observer TS enables them to increase logging density, accommodate high-resolution content repurposing, directly monitor native MPEG ASI/IP handoffs, and inspect and export transport streams — all while operating efficiently over a LAN and WAN. In addition to making it easier for users to access, store, and leverage both content and metadata compressed within transport streams, the Observer TS enables full-quality content logging, thereby opening the door to new use cases for logged content, such as repurposing high-resolution data, managing interactive content, and dialnorm reporting.
Using Observer TS for compliance logging and air checks, operators can easily extract flexible MPEG metadata and troubleshoot the MPEG transport stream live or from the Observer log. The availability of two configurable logs — either the high-bit rate native ASI content or the low-bit rate proxy for remote viewing — supports an extremely network-efficient logging and monitoring workflow.
