EastLink Chooses Volicon Observer® Edge
Observer Edge Provides Cost-Effective Quality and Compliance Monitoring Solution for 15-Channel Regional Network
BURLINGTON, Mass. — March 17, 2009 — Volicon today announced that EastLink has implemented the Volicon Observer® Edge video monitoring solution for all 15 of its channels operated by EastLink Television, the company’s regional TV network serving communities in Canada’s Maritime Provinces. The Observer Edge provides EastLink Television with an efficient and comprehensive means of logging and monitoring aired video from a central location to support regulatory compliance and improve quality of service.
The Observer Edge is a cost-effective video monitoring solution designed for cable MSOs and station groups that continuously monitor video output and transmit quality data to a central server. Prior to implementing the Observer Edge, EastLink Television depended on videotape recordings for compliance logging and trouble resolution — a system that was both costly and inefficient. The network was required to operate and maintain separate VCRs at each station location, and relied on the local operators to change out the tapes daily and to manually search through recordings to locate evidence of a transmission error.
Today, the Observer Edge provides a digital solution that enables users in EastLink’s central operations center to monitor all 15 channels at once, and instantly notifies them via e-mail when an error occurs — complete with a link to the footage in question. Since the Observer Edge automatically archives all aired footage for one month, it ensures instant compliance with CRTC regulations.
“The selection of the Observer Edge was an easy choice for us. Of the systems we looked at, it offered superior functionality and performance for the price, and is the easiest to use,” said Michael Smith, director of EastLink Television. “Being able to access our aired video from a central location gives us greater control and enables us to respond much more quickly to transmission errors. In the past, we might have had to wait until the station in question sent us a tape or DVD showing the problem.”
