Streamlined Media Monitoring: City of Dallas
The Office of Cultural Affairs for the City of Dallas uses the Volicon Observer to keep public officials informed about key news stories pertaining to city services. The Observer replaces an old, labor intensive tape-based workflow in which nine major channel feeds were recorded and edited onto VHS. The office’s public information officers were assigned to monitor approximately two channels each. Every morning, they would spend hours searching through the tape for stories on the city. Then, they would manually edit together the clips and deliver them to the city manager for viewing.
Now, those same public information officers simply type in a search term on their desktops and receive relevant news clips through the Observer, which automatically records all audio, video, and closed caption text from multiple broadcast feeds 24/7. The officers then edit the clips together on the desktop and deliver the packages digitally to the city manager.
“It used to take our public information officers half their days to search, edit, and deliver important news stories to the City Manager,” said Bennie Wilcox, cable TV systems manager for the City of Dallas. “Now the whole process takes about an hour. Each day the Observer eliminates four to six hours of searching videotape.” The Observer’s user-friendly interface and powerful feature set has been embraced by a whole new group of users within the City of Dallas. Wilcox adds that “the uncomplicated Volicon system makes it so easy to capture and organize video content that even our interns are experts!”
